The History of the Glasgow Arms Hotel, Ultimo Sydney
Established in the late 19th century, the Glasgow Arms Hotel remains one of Ultimo’s enduring historic pubs, serving locals and travellers for generations.Located on historic Harris Street in Ultimo, the Glasgow Arms Hotel is one of the enduring reminders of traditional Sydney pub culture. Positioned between Ultimo, Pyrmont and Darling Harbour, the hotel reflects the rich working-class, industrial and maritime history that helped shape inner Sydney.
Long before the surrounding precinct became known for apartments, universities, entertainment venues and creative industries, Ultimo and Pyrmont were among Sydney’s busiest industrial neighbourhoods. The area surrounding Darling Harbour was filled with dock workers, railway labourers, quarrymen, brewery employees, factory workers and maritime tradespeople who helped build modern Sydney throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s.
At the centre of community life were the local pubs.

The Industrial History of Pyrmont and Ultimo
The neighbouring suburb of Pyrmont was once dominated by sandstone quarries, wool stores, wharves and the famous CSR Sugar Refinery. Ships regularly moved through Darling Harbour while workers filled the surrounding streets, boarding houses and pubs after long shifts on the waterfront.
Ultimo developed alongside Pyrmont as a major transport and industrial precinct connected to Sydney’s expanding rail network and commercial growth. Warehouses, factories, tram routes and power stations transformed the area into a thriving working suburb during the late nineteenth century.
Throughout this period, pubs like the Glasgow Arms Hotel became an important part of everyday life in Sydney’s inner city.
Harris Street and Old Sydney Pub CultureToday, Harris Street connects many of Sydney’s major attractions including Darling Harbour, ICC Sydney, UTS and Pyrmont’s dining and entertainment precinct. Historically however, Harris Street was lined with corner pubs, boarding houses, merchants, warehouses and local businesses servicing the growing industrial population of Ultimo and Pyrmont.
The Glasgow Arms Hotel remains part of this historic streetscape and continues to preserve the character of a traditional Sydney pub hotel.
